Disc couplings

The SAPITFLEX disc coupling is of the continuous-ring disc diaphragm type made of high-strength stainless steel. Torque is transmitted rigidly by means of alternating conductive and driven pins on a common primitive diameter. SAPITFLEX couplings in normal execution are manufactured with the diaphragms made of stainless steel, hardware and bushes of high-strength steel and the other parts of carbon steel and can operate at temperatures from -20°C to +250°C. They can be supplied upon request:

  • Fully stainless steel where there are corrosion problems
  • Made of special steel to be able to work at low temperatures -40°C
  • With hubs and spacers made of titanium alloys or aluminum alloys to reduce weight and inertia
  • with composite spacer to reduce weight and thus make couplings with long lengths without intermediate supports.

It is SAPITFLEX's flagship product with features that make it easy to evaluate its technical and economic advantages due essentially to:

  • Absence of maintenance and lubrication;
  • possibility of inspection without stopping the plant and quick alignment verification without disconnetting the coupling;
  • easy replacement of the disc blades pack only, leaving the coupled machines in place without the necessity for realignment ;
  • No torsional backlash, high torsional stiffness, and rapid damping of torsional vibration;
  • preservation of balancing over time ;
  • high reliability even at high speeds and under severe operating and environmental conditions;
  • Compliance with ATEX Group 2 - Cat. 2 regulations (equivalent to Zones 1-2-21-22).

Application fields:

The high level of quality achieved in the design and construction of disc type transmissions has enabled:

    • Large-scale adoption of Sapitflex disc couplings as a replacement for gear couplings by the largest manufacturing entities in the domestic steel and energy plants;
    • Adoption of disc spacer for never-before-experienced applications such as rolling benches in steel mills for torques of 850 kNm;
    • use for specific demanding applications such as: transmissions for High Speed (up to 15000 [RPM]) for gas/steam turbines or pumps, made under quality control according to API 671 Standards; transmissions for test benches (up to 30000 [RPM]) for engine test rooms;
    • production of disc transmissions with the adoption of carbon fiber spacer for cooling towers, test benches even at rotational speeds above 12,000 r.p.m., vertical transmission pumping stations with carbon fiber intermediate shafts with lengths up to 17m.
    • transmissions for High Speed for gas/steam turbines complete (upon request) with eddy current protection system, shear pin safety system, surface protection with post-oxidation nitriding thermochemical treatment against weathering corrosion;
    • test benches;
    • Horizontal and vertical centrifugal pumps;
    • Cooling towers with carbon fiber spacer;
    • Overhead crane control groups;
    • Conveyor belt drive units;
    • Tissue plants, compressors, turbines, food plants, ventilation plants, ORC turbines, marine propellers, hydro turbines, laminating plants, paper and corrugated board production plants.
